The Solferino Academy is an initiative of the IFRC and its member National Societies that aims to help the Red Cross and Red Crescent network anticipate, understand, and adapt to trends and emerging issues. The Solferino Academy fosters engaged spaces and learning opportunities to understand the implications of change on the effectiveness of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in meeting humanitarian and development needs now and into the future.

In collaboration with National Societies, the Solferino Academy provides workshops for National Societies, research, analysis and other services to help our global network understand what changes should be made today to navigate better the possibilities for what lies ahead. The Solferino Academy deploys and coordinates a range of futures and foresight tools and methods, such as horizon scanning; trends and emerging issues analysis; scenarios; and forecasting analytics, among others.

The Solferino Academy draws in views and insight from leading experts and partners in various fields and disciplines by combining external research and knowledge with the robust intelligence of our leadership, staff, and volunteers. Our work seeks to help leaders steer change at local, national, regional, and global levels.

The IFRC Secretariat with the support and collaboration of the Italian Red Cross, Netherlands Red Cross, Norwegian Red Cross, Australian Red Cross, Danish Red Cross, and the Kenyan Red Cross leads the Solferino Academy.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent has a long history of innovation and continues to innovate in communities around the world.

Many National Societies already use Futures and Foresight approaches, particular forms of trend analysis and horizon scanning, or the use of data for anticipatory planning and action.
