Before joining the IFRC, Mr Rahimov worked at the Red Crescent Society of Azerbaijan, first joining the organization in 1999 as volunteer, an then being promoted into different positions until 2003, when he was appointed as Secretary General. Mr Rahimov was a member of the Development Commission of IFRC between 2005 and 2007, and spent one year in Norway with Norwegian Red Cross as international youth delegate between 2002 and 2003. In 2007, by the decision of Presidium of Azerbaijani Red Crescent was awarded by “Red Crescent” medal and in 2010 with state “Progress” medal.
Mr Rahimov was essential in the provision of IFRC support to National Societies in the Southern Caucasus and in building capacities of the Georgia Red Cross in response to consequences of the military conflict between 2008 and 2011 as IFRC Country Representative. Prior to his current Deputy Regional Director position which he holds since 2017, he was the Head of Country Cluster covering Turkey, Central Asia, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine for a period of three years between 2014 and 2017 and Senior officer, National Societies Organizational development and Learning from 2012 to 2014.
