Geneva/Panama/Nassau, 18 September 2019— The President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Francesco Rocca, will be in the Bahamas on 20-21 September to meet people who have been affected by Hurricane Dorian.
He will also spend time with Red Cross volunteers who have been on the ground since the first hours after the hurricane, working to save lives and bring help to those who need it most. During his visit, President Rocca will discuss humanitarian needs in the country and the Red Cross’ response with emergency teams and Government leadership.
Mr Rocca’s visit also takes place just days before the United Nations Climate Action Summit. At this summit, which takes place in New York on 23 September, Mr Rocca will urge governments and others to do more to reduce the impact that climate-related disasters like Hurricane Dorian have on vulnerable people. Such disasters are expected to become more frequent and more intense as a result of climate change.
