The Hague/Geneva, 16 October 2018 – The Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Elhadj As Sy, was appointed in The Hague today as a member of the Global Commission on Adaptation.

Mr Sy is one of 28 Commissioners of the new Commission, which is co-chaired by Ban Ki-moon, former Secretary General of the United Nations, Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Kristalina Georgieva, CEO of the World Bank.

Mr Sy said: “We see the reality of climate change brought about by humans every day. We see it, and we see how it disproportionately affects the most vulnerable. More than half of the emergencies the IFRC responds to are a direct result of weather-related events. And the majority of our other operations are compounded by and made more complex by changing climate.

“Shock and hazards don’t have to become natural disasters if we give early warning and take early action: saving lives, preserving livelihoods, promoting ways of life that adapt to changing circumstances. We in the IFRC commit to helping the world accelerate adaptation.”

The Global Commission on Adaptation is a new initiative that aims to raise the visibility of climate change adaptation and catalyze a global movement to bring scale and speed to adaptation solutions. #AccelerateAdaptation, http://gca.org
