Cairo, 24 July 2018Following his nomination last week as Goodwill Ambassador for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) for the Middle East and North Africa, renowned Iraqi musician, Naseer Shamma donated blood yesterday to the Egyptian Red Crescent at Luth House, in Cairo.

Mr Shamma was joined by his students and, in the coming weeks, by music students at his schools in Abu Dhabi, Sudan and Iraq. This collaboration follows the highly successful digital blood donation campaign “Giving Is In Your Blood”, which ran for five weeks in eight Middle East countries during Ramadan. In partnership with Facebook, this campaign saw dramatic rises in voluntary blood donations during a traditionally lean period.

Mr Shamma was officially nominated for this role during an event at the Egyptian Opera House on 21 July 2018. During his acceptance speech, Mr Shamma indicated his intention to speak out on behalf of vulnerable migrants.

I look forward to using my time to advocate for the rights and dignity of refugees and others who have been displaced from their homes,” he said.
