During 2017 millions of people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen faced a severe food crisis with risks of famine and were in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The Sahel also experienced pockets of high food insecurity. The situation was compounded by disease outbreaks, continuous drought, rising prices, insecurity, and restricted humanitarian access.
