The outbreak was confirmed on 8 May. By 21 May, 21 samples had tested positive for the Zaire strain of the Ebola virus. There are 46 suspected cases of haemorrhagic fever and 26 deaths. The deadly nature of Ebola means that we must respond effectively and quickly to contain the spread of the disease, prevent new cases, and limit the impact.

The IFRC/DRC Red Cross emergency operation is focusing on epidemic control: community-based surveillance and contact tracing, safe and dignified burials, risk communication and community engagement, disinfection of households, and psychosocial support.
